Henderson, Andrew William

Captain / Rifle Brigade

1894 - 1916

Andrew William Henderson was born 13 June 1894, the elder son of William Henderson of Glasgow, and elder brother of Captain Thomas Harvey Henderson, M.C. (I 1909-1914), Rifle Brigade, who fell on 30 November 1917 (see individual entry).

He came to Winchester College from Mr. Bernard Rendall's school at Copthorne in January 1908 and was in I House, Turner's. He was a Commoner Prefect and Head of House, reached the senior Division of Sixth Book, was President of Golf Club and a Colour-Sergeant in the O.T.C. He left Winchester in March 1913 and after a short period in Germany he went up in October 1913 to Balliol College, Oxford.

Very early in the war he was gazetted to the 6th Battalion Rifle Brigade and at a later date obtained a regular commission in the 1st Battalion. He was killed at Serre on 1 July 1916, on the opening day of the Battle of the Somme during heavy fighting in a German counter-attack which drove the British forces back. In the space of a few hours the Battalion suffered nearly 500 casualties.

Another OW, Lieutenant Valentine Braithwaite MC (E 1910-1912) was killed in the same action.
