Lowe, Richard Conway

Captain / Warwickshire Regiment

1894 - 1916
Biography:

Richard Conway Lowe was born 12 July 1894, the son of Conway and Marion Lowe of Edgbaston.

He came to Winchester College from Colet House School at Rhyl as a Scholar, being placed second on the Roll. He was a Prefect from 1912 to 1913, stood on Dress for College XV and was captain of the Shooting VIII in his last year. He later shot for Oxford University. He was elected to a Classical Scholarship at Christ Church in 1913.

One year into his degree course, on the outbreak of war, Richard enlisted in the Warwickshire Regiment, receiving his commission a few weeks later. He went to the front in April 1915, was twice wounded that year and in January 1916, was awarded the M.C. for carrying a wounded man to safety across the open under fire, when he himself had already been hit. The citation read as follows: 'For conspicuous gallantry on November 4th 1915, in France. When directing a working party in front of the parapet, the Germans opened fire and wounded a man of the covering party. Second Lieutenant Lowe and a Sergeant rushed to his aid, and although the Sergeant was grazed by a bullet and Second Lieutenant Lowe shot in the thigh, the bullet being subsequently found in the wound, they carried the wounded man across the open and through the wire into a place of safety. Second Lieutenant Lowe had previously been wounded and had been brought to notice for excellent work at the front'.

Richard was sent home after this injury and in January 1916 was personally presented with his M.C. by the King. He returned to France in April and was killed in action between Thiepval and Ovillers on 18 August 1916.
