Biography:

Eric Harald Tottie was born 23 February 1895, the son of William Harald Tottie of Tilehurst, Berkshire, and Mary, daughter of Captain Francis Barron Blake of the US Navy.

He came to Winchester College from Copthorne School in September 1908 and was in A House, Chernocke House. Eric played soccer for his house, and and cricket for 2nd XI. He also played in OTH XV and was On Dress for OTH VIin 1912.

Eric left Winchester in December 1912 and went on to  RMC Sandhurst. He had intended to enter the Indian Army, but on the outbreak of war he was offered and accepted a commission in the 3rd Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, proceeding to France on 8 September 1914 to join the 1st Battalion.

He died in hospital at Braisne on 22 September 1914 of wounds received at Vailly two days earlier during the Battle of the Aisne while rendering assistance to another officer in the open and is buried in Grave II.D.16 at the Vailly British Cemetery. 

His elder brother, not a Wykehamist, died the same day when HMS Aboukir was torpedoed in the North Sea.
