Allingham, Harold Gilbey

Staff Sergeant / South African Union Defence Force

1887 - 1917
Biography:

Harold Gilbey Allingham was born 28 June 1887, the son of John Ellis Allingham and Emmeline Beatrice Allingham of London and Johannesburg.

He came to Winchester College from Mr. W.H. Kemball Cook's school at Stanmore Park in January 1901 and was in D House, Fearon's. He played in his house soccer team but we otherwise know very little about his school career.

Allingham left Winchester in the Spring of 1905 and entered into practice as a solicitor in Johannesburg - he attended an Old Wykehamist dinner in the city in 1912. On the outbreak of war he enlisted for service in German East Africa. He was attached to the Camp Commandant's Staff and acted as Adjutant General of the Depot Base Records. He died of dysentery on 28 March 1917 in the military hospital at Dar-es-Salaam.
