Lowndes, Richard Forbes
Eldest son of The Rt Hon. Sir George Rivers Lowndes, PC., K.C.S.I., K.C. (College, 1875-1880), of the Council of the Viceroy of India. His mother was Hilda, daughter of Major Lachlan Forbes of Shillingstone in Dorset. He came to Winchester from Mr. A.H. Armes’ school at Woodcote. He was Head of his House in his last year, a prominent member of the Natural History Society and brilliant gymnast.
He left in December 1915, to take a commission in the 5th Battalion King’s Royal Rifle Corps, and went to the front in August 1916. He fell near Beaumont Hamel on November 14th 1916, while in charge of the Lewis gun section of the 1st Battalion in an attack on the German trenches.
This same action took the life of Lieutenant John Henry Tandy Liddell (I, 1904-1907) (see individual entry).
A carved string-course has been placed in his memory in the apse of the Mission Church at Rudmore.
Richard is also commemorated in a memorial window in the west end of the parish church of Hooly Rood at Shillingstone, Dorset, where his mother’s family lived. The dedication plaque to the window over the west door is fixed to the north wall of the tower, and reads:
“To the glory of God and to commemorate all the young soldiers and sailors of Shillingstone who lost their lives in the Great War, this window is dedicated by Mary Lowndes and B. Forbes, and particularly to the dear memory of Richard Forbes Lowndes, Second Lieutenant of the King’s Royal Rifles who fell at Beaumont Hamel Nov. 14th 1916, aged 19”.
This window was the gift of his aunts, Barbara Forbes, his mother’s sister and Mary Lowndes, his father’s sister. Mary Lowndes was the first woman stained glass artist in the UK, and both women were active in the Suffragette movement.
