Hedley, William Alexander Cosgrove


Only son of the Reverend Herbert Hedley of Nackington Vicarage, Canterbury. He was born at Mickely Vicarage, Yorkshire and came to Winchester from Aysgarth School.  After two years in Bramston’s he left for Lancing. He had just matriculated at Trinity College, Cambridge, when war broke out, and was gazetted within a month to the 8th Battalion, The Buffs. He was mentioned in Despatches in November 1917 and promoted Captain just before his death. He fell near Dickebusch near Ypres on July 19th 1918, a day short of his 23rd birthday.
